This is a book that is certainly not for everyone. She was vicious, unsentimental, lashing BDSM poetry onto the backs of her pages and giggling while unsuspecting audiences everywhere ran from the theaters in tears.
The doctor deduces Phaedra’s romantic affection for her step-son and warns her against consummating her affection. Am I glad I did? It’s shocking in the moment, yes, but it’s also so much more than that. Perhaps not for the world, but who cares what happens to that awful thing, anyway.
Books by Sarah Kane. Phaedra approaches Hippolytus, regardless of the warnings she has heard. Perhaps these plays were Kane’s way of externalizing her personal struggles, exorcising her demons, or simply a very public cry for help.

When Sarah Kane’s first play, Blastedwas staged at the Royal Court Theatre in it was hailed both as a “masterpiece” and as a “disgusting piece of filth” Daily Mail. Knowing that the play–which is essentially a suicide’s monologue–was the last Kane wrote before her own suicide seemed to solidify its veracity in my mind: Ballard, also a master of the slow, symbolic unmasking of psychosis. Hippolytus openly speaks about his multiple sexual partners and reinforces how he doesn’t care for any of them and won’t care for Phaedra.
During the interaction Hippolytus informs Phaedra that he has had sex with his step-sister, Strophe, and that Strophe, Phaedra’s biological daughter, has also had sex with Theseus, Phaedra’s husband and Hippolytus’s father. It is later revealed that Strophe had sex with Theseus on the night Theseus and Phaedra were married. I’m not sure I’d ever want to see them staged, because they are viscerally awful for me, but again, very well written, intentional theatre.

Then there is the second period, containing the plays Crave and 4. Despite it being the most disturbing plays ever, they are extremely well written. Phaedra’s Love is ssarah play by British playwright Sarah Kane. Paperbackpages. It is fedrw for me to consider Kane’s work outside of its theatrical contexts as my first encounter with her was through Warlikowski’s production of “Cleansed” on stage.
But Sarah Kane manages to release a blistering opus before leaving us. Un movimento per allontanarsi, Non per avvicinarsi. Metti che prendi la macchina e le chiavi di casa loro. Reading them back-to-back I am glad to have never seen a live performance–I simply cannot imagine the fortitude it would take for an actor to deliver the lines without losing themselves mentally, emotionally and physically.
