Just seven years out of college, Kate and Stuart purchase the house with the best of intentions, hoping that it will somehow help rejuvenate the insecure threads of their marriage. Then I went back in time and imagined the circumstances that might lead a teenage boy to shoot someone under his own roof, then walk straight down to the corner store and surrender. So when Kate throws herself into remodeling the home, he never wanted, he feels her pulling away from him. The main characters, Kate and Walker are both obsessed with this house. Maybe I misinterpreted the story, but I think Walker Price was guilty of the crime, were it a crime of passion or not, he still did it.

Dream House is Valerie Laken’s debut novel about a young married couple named Kate and Stuart who buy a run-down house desperately in need of serious repairs and renovation. Eighteen years later, Kate Kinzler ruefully contemplates the crummy Ann Arbor apartment she shares with husband Stuart. Instead they discover that their home was the scene of a terrible crime many years ago—a revelation that tips the balance of their precarious union.

But Laken’s pacing is good and the novel works best not as a thriller but as a story of three people trying to find themselves within lsken the walls of a house. Anyway, kudos to Valerie, for writing a completely absorbing and creepy and compassionate and wise novel.

Book review: Valerie Laken’s *Dream House*

I was very happy to have read Dream House and will definitely be on the lookout for any other titles from Valerie Laken. As a simple story about people, it’s decent.

I don’t but it. When Kate learns that the house was the scene of a violent crime years ago and she meets a strange man who has been lurking around in the neighborhood, unforseeable relationships are formed and dark secrets about the house are eventually revealed.


I read this rream like 8 years ago. No ordinary ghost story, it offers insight into the troubled human psyche and a deep inquiry into the meaning of home through multiple storylines.

I love a mystery, but more than that, I love a good character driven novel and I definitely found that in Dream House. So, what’s the problem?
