I have tried to remove weight, sometimes from people, sometimes from heavenly bodies, sometimes from cities; above all I have tried to remove weight from the structure of stories and from language. The prose read so fluidly, yet so playfully idiosyncratic, I almost forgot that it wasn’t written in English. It also gives a key to decoding the style used in all these cosmic comedies: Trying to impress her, I showed her what I had captured. Although this wasn’t the ‘Complete Cosmicomics’ which features more stories plucked from other Calvino booksthese original 12 tales were more than enough to enter Calvino’s Universe and come out the other side with sheer delight.
Qfwfq has a refreshingly frank and humorous attitude towards such momentous moments as the birth of our universe, the origins of life, the extinction of the dinosaurs, the first animals to crawl onto land, the early days of the Moon, etc. Compared to the uncertainties of earth and air, lagoons and seas and oceans represented a future with security.

Of course we did. Maybe with the fact that, this book cannot be tied down to a particular genre. All of the stories feature non-human characters which have been heavily anthropomorphized. It’s now, in a sense, other-wise: Italo Calvino, in Cosmicomicswrites a philosophical, pseudo-scientific fantasy that attempts, somewhat whimsically, to answer the kind of questions a child might pose: Calvino’s tale parallels the type itao world in which we now live.

I’m finding that I may not really be conveying just how enjoyable these semi-abstract stories — personal interactions playing out on a cosmic scale — really are.

Calvino, most especially has a knack for these set pieces. Still — this is a gorgeously packaged edition and a must-have for Calvino supporters. Maybe it was the character names that all sounded like they came from titles of Borges stories. Or maybe with the fact that, there are no humans in this book.

But this is a delight, and in the end, something you need to read. View all 14 comments. Calvino could have been even more imaginative in this regard by refraining from using anthropomorphized or even gendered language at all. I especially liked the first collection in the compilation, Cosmicomics. I think I would have gotten into it more if I was more interested in science and space, but I’d be happy to have my future children read these stories when they’re young – maybe they’ll become more interested in the physical universe than I am.
