That’s what makes this book, unique. This is a short but amazingly rich and complex novel. And my wife’s father, and my friend’s father. One aspect of Moran that I could readily empathise with was his love of the land. Each time he met them at the station his very presence affirmed and reaffirmed again as he kissed them goodbye. Everyone except Luke turns up at his funeral and acclaim him as a truly great and heroic man. They brought distraction, something to look forward to, something to mull over after they had gone.

McGahern was also a farmer, with a keen sense of country life. He refused, however, to capitalise on this notoriety, instead continuing to publish quietly.

McGahern was prevented from working as a schoolteacher in the s after The Dark was banned by the Irish Censorship Board. This power struggle between the two ajongst several times alluded to in military terms. He is an embittered Irish Republican soldier. He does exhibit some inherent attractive qualities. His wife, Mcgwhern, and mcgahsrn three daughters who love and fear their father, now care for him as his health fails and the shadows draw on.

He vents his sense of betrayal on his family, allowing McGahern to explore how political turmoil can affect families. The book is very well written. The story of the family is an allegory for that of independent Ireland — without the father the family would not exist, but until Moran is dead, the family cannot become itself. Although Moran is a well-respected member of his community and a devout Catholicthere is a cruel, violent, and controlling side to his character.

The lives and loves of three thirtysomething Dublin women who have been close friends for years. When Moran marries Rose it is obvious that he never intended a marriage of equals.

One other thing that was odd about this book was the lack of time line.
